Back to Basics

Today I was logging in to yahoo and the following headline caught my eye Obamas to Plant White House Vegetable Garden .  What a wonderful project.  Nothing tastes better than homegrown fruits and vegetables.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if something as simple as planting a garden starts a trend in America?  One where we become a nation that cares more about healthy food?  I’m curious… how many community and school garden projects will stem from this “White House Garden”.

I can’t wait to get back to the states and start my own garden.  I love flowers but I’m ready to branch out to herbs especially after living overseas and having access to fresh dill, and cilantro everyday.  Of course where there is cilantro there also needs to be tomatoes and peppers for fresh salsa….wow, I need to get something to eat, but not before I leave you with this

“The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses.”  ~Hanna Rion

So, what will you be planting in your garden?

Education of an Expat

Tonight I was souvenir shopping with a friend who was in town.  We were walking along “Smelly Alley” which is a popular place to go for Baku souvenir items.  We were looking for a shot glass that had the Maiden Tower on it.  Surprisingly we were NOT able to locate this item, but we were shown just about every other shot glass in Baku.  At one point the man who worked one of the stalls was showing me crystal tea glasses.  He remarked that “your President drank tea out of a glass like this when he visited Baku”…I said, “George Bush?”  He kind of pursed his lips, made a psst sound and said, “No, NEW president, Obama”.  He then went on to say that Obama had visited here in 2005….”Good Man, Obama”.

Someone, anyone PLEASE before Bush leaves office ask him to say Azerbaijan and then ask him to find it on a map.

When I came home I did my usual google search and sure enough, in 2005 Obama visited Ukraine, Russia and Azerbaijan with a Senior Senator.  Here’s a link to the article, which is actually pretty interesting.

I also found another interesting site tonight called Legistorm.com.  Legistorm is fascinating to me.  Here you can look up all sorts of information about how our elected representatives spend public money.  Check it out.  I think it’s interesting that President Elect Obama received a rug from Azerbaijan’s President as a gift.  The rugs here are beautiful.  I’d love to see a picture of it and I’d rather receive a rug than a vial of water from the Caspian any day!

Match – O – Matic

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , , , , at 11:43 am by Jenn

There’s a solution out there for any of you who still haven’t made up your mind who to vote for in the upcoming election.

ABC News has put together Match-O-Matic.  It’s a 13 question quiz that gives political statements made by the candidates.  You select the one that you most agree with and at the end it shows who your choice for President should be  based on the statements you chose.

I was a little surprised by my results – I actually chose McCain in 4 of the 13 statements!  I was surprised it was so many.

What’s in a Name?

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , , at 1:30 pm by Jenn

Yesterday, I heard for the second time in as many days “America is not ready for a president with the middle name Hussein”.  These individuals are of course referring to Barack Obama, who like most of us didn’t choose his name, it was chosen for him.   In searching for the meaning of these names Barack, and Hussein I came across the following piece by Juan Cole.  I couldn’t have said it better myself.

So what does the name mean anyway?  Well, according to babynames.com:

Barack – means ‘blessed’ and is from African origin, a form of the Hebrew name Baruch

Hussein – means ‘handsome one’ and is of Arabic origin.

Just for kicks I looked up the names of the people who made these comments, and well I’ll just say, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.  Oh, and if you are basing your vote on the origin of a name, John is a Hebrew name as well, so sorry about your luck!

Do people really forget that we are a country founded and established by immigrants?

Ok, I feel better know.  I’m off to get Max a haircut.

What do politics and knitting have in common?

There has been a lot of talk about Barack Obama on the blogs over these past few weeks.  This is perhaps one of the funniest things I’ve seen.  Not funny intentionally, but funny in the sense that it just happened so naturally.

Ruth – I missed the deadline to change my party affiliation, but the absentee ballot application is in the mail!
