Olympic Medals

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , at 1:30 pm by Jenn

I’ve been following the Olympic games as closely as AFN (Armed Forces Network) allows.  I’ve been up most days bright and early to catch the best coverage which comes on usually between 4am-9am Baku time.

Yesterday during Michael Phelps’s medal ceremony I noticed for the first time the reverse side of this years medal and thought it was absolutely beautiful.  So, for those of you who haven’t seen it yet, here it is

and see this page for more info on the design.

The US leads the medal count with 27 total medals, but China still has more total gold at this point (16).  I see now that Belarus has one medal, a bronze and that Azerbaijan has 3 medals, including one gold.  I’m going now to check that out.

Wow – thanks for the info! I’d wondered about the design, but hadn’t heard any reports of the actual details. What a wonderful idea, with the jade – I knew they must have something special. I think China has done a wonderful job of being host country (despite the underage female gymnasts. . . )

    :O)

  2. i was looking up the medal counts when your post came into my reader. thailand has one, too.

I doubt that the age speculation thing is over. There has been “talk” about it all over the net and news here.

Azeri Olympians who win gold are given ALOT of money – equivalent to US $740,000 and an apartment. That’s a pretty sweet deal. So far only the one gold for Azerbaijan though.
