Getting my curves back!

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , , , at 1:18 am by Jenn

Oprah does it again.  Yesterday I was watching Oprah and Kirstie Alley was the guest.  Now personally I think Kirstie is a train wreck, she just can never seem to “get it together” as far as I’m concerned.  As I was watching the piece about the gym in Kirstie’s house I recognized that the equipment was from Curves.

I had intended to rejoin Curves during my visit to the states when I found a two week free coupon in a magazine.  Of course I forgot the magazine in Baku.  When I went to the Curves website I found that they were conducting a Women’s Fitness Study and are offering 30 days for $30….sign me up!

Today I signed up to participate in the study and my mom will be signing up on Monday.  I really enjoyed working out at Curves when I lived in Maryland.  I would get up at 5:45am, be at Curves by 6:00am and back home in the shower and at work by 8:00 it was WONDERFUL and I looked and felt great!

When Scott and I moved to NC I transferred my membership to the Curves in Sneads Ferry, but the hours just didn’t work for me.  The center didn’t open til 8:00am and they closed at either 6 or 7pm.  That’s when I started to put the weight back on.  I like the Curves workout, it’s fast, it’s effective and it’s fun.  Better than any gym.  The women that surround you at Curves supportive and encouraging.  I love it!

So today I had my first of what I hope are many (I know for sure I’ll do the 30) Curves workouts during my visit to the US.  Best news of all is that there are Curves facilities in Chile too so I just may be able to whip my fat ass back in to shape once and for all!

When I stepped on the scale today I was SHOCKED!  I can’t believe how much weight I put on since we moved overseas, but of course I’m not too shocked because I pretty much did nothing but sit on my ass for the last 18 months.  Even though I was shocked by my weight and feeling a little down in the dumps about it, when my BMI measurement came up it was in the normal range – THANK GOD!  The Curves attendant actually remarked to me, “WOW, you are the first one that I’ve ever done that’s been normal!”.  Personally that made me feel great, professionally that made me feel ill.

So here’s my challenge to all of you women out there…if there is a Curves facility within 10 miles of your home I challenge you to join the Fitness Study.  Try it for 30 days and see what a difference 30 days of exercise makes to your body and the way you feel about yourself!  Let’s shed some fat and inches together!

Visit the Curves website to find a facility near you!

What A Difference The Sun Makes.

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , , , , at 3:19 pm by Jenn

The sun is shining today!  I actually felt like getting out of bed this morning.  I felt so energized I decided to walk to the Embassy for lunch.  -12 Celsius, who cares!  I have my new down coat and the sun is shining.  I even remembered to take my camera with me and snap some long overdue pictures of Minsk.

 So here they are:

This is taken as my walk is just getting underway, I’m a little way from my apartment, but not very far in to my walk.

I don’t know much about this memorial – CTELLA (pronounced Stella) Memorial, but it is a few blocks from our apartment.  There is a great park surrounding it.  This is a memorial monument for WW2 soliders.  There is a plaque there, but of course, I cannot read it (note to self, ask someone what the plaque says).

I sometimes pass this billboard.  It used to say Happy Birthday Minsk, now it says something along the lines of Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

There are a couple of bridges to cross and I love to look at the ducks.  I can’t imagine being in the water this time of year.

These planters are scatter throughout the park.  They change each season from what I’ve seen.  In the fall there were mums, now there is pine greenery.  They are really pretty.

Here’s another view of the river looking down toward the Island of Tears.  I don’t have a picture of that today, but will make sure to take one for a future post.

Every once in a while I stop to look around and behind me.  It’s that kind of town.  There’s no one there today.  I guess they don’t like the cold either.  I decided to snap a picture showing the distance I’d covered.  If you look off in the distance behind the building in the middle you can see the monument.

So that’s it.  Finally some good pictures of Minsk on a sunny day.  I had to put the camera away though because it was so windy that my cheeks were burning.  I still had about a 15 minute walk and was desperate for a latte to warm me up.

New Year’s Resolution

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , , at 3:22 pm by Jenn

My New Year’s Resolution is to treat my body better by establishing a regular work out routine and sticking with it.  My goal is to get to 125# by my 39th birthday.

When Scott and I moved to Belarus we joined a local gym.  Of course Scott has been going on a regular basis and I have not.  In fact, I have gone twice; once for a massage back in October and once yesterday.

I met a couple of girls (women) at a party of Friday night who attend the same gym we joined.  They talked me in to attending this class called “Pump It Up”….yeah I know.  I’m sure it is the same as “Body Pump” which is offered in the states.  I accepted the invitation.  The class lasted an hour, it was hard and made me work up a sweat.  I really enjoyed it, my body on the other hand is really hating me today.  I should have known to take it easy my first time back.  I also should have known from watching several friends back in the states attempt to walk and do basic ADL’s (activities of daily living) following these classes.  Needless to say, “Pump It Up” was a true experience, not only was it in Russian, (thank goodness I know my numbers) but it really made me realize just how out of shape I am.

The funny thing is that at another party last night (tis the season) I met another woman who attends this gym on a regular basis.  She invited me to attend “Sculpt” and “For Men Only”….”Sculpt” maybe, “For Men Only”, maybe in 6 months when I’ve toned up a bit.  I don’t want to kill myself right away.  I think some water aerobics and “Pump It Up” will be good for now.  There were two instructors a male and a female.  I’ve never seen so many muscles on such a small woman in all my life.  She was muscle and bone, that was it. I don’t need to look like that, muscle, bone and average body fat would be great.

The women in this country are all in really good shape (for the most part).  They walk EVERYWHERE and they really watch what they eat.   They are true role models for portion control.

Speaking of food, Scott and I are off to the grocery store.  We’re having cabbage rolls and mashed potatoes for dinner.  One of my Belarussian favorites!
