All About Town

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , at 8:10 am by Jenn

Well not really all about it, but some more pictures of around town.

First I want to start with a few pictures of the Azeri National Bird.  You’ve heard me mention it before, I think I even posted a picture, but somehow I really don’t think you have grasped the seriousness of the problem.  We are being OVER RUN by these things.  Here’s proof:

We saw this flock on our drive out to find a new restaurant that we’d heard about.   Once you get past the initial shock of the Azeri National Bird plastic bags the scenery at times is really beautiful.

One of the prettiest areas near the Old City is called Fountain Square (it’s also the most crowded).  When you are in this area you really feel like you are in Europe. Here you will find shopping, restaurants and entertainment (movie theaters, go-carts, bars, people watching, etc).

There is also that animal population that I’ve talked about.  You cannot enjoy a meal outside because you see things like this:

  or this

It really breaks my heart to see so many homeless animals.  These two were very playful and entertaining so it wasn’t quite as heartbreaking.  They even managed to score a few morsels from the table behind us and somehow some of Scott’s (he who doesn’t like cats) calamari ended up behind him on the ground….hmmm.  We were eating at the Mediterranea restaurant near the Maiden Tower and did have entertainment provided by some local musicians during dinner.  I’m not quite sure what type of music it was, it had kind of an Islamic, Mediterranean/Caribbean sound to it….anyway, it was fun and the atmosphere made me forget I was in Baku (except for the wind).

Other animal sightings are just plain bizarre,

These are two different groups (flocks) of sheep.  I had heard abou them but never seen them until this day that I took Allison for a walk to our new local market.

Well, at least now the Mystery of “Where’d That Poop Come From” has been answered.

Other animal sightings however are simply to keep me entertained.  Poor Max.  Stay tuned for those pics.  The subject is not being cooperative right now… : )

LOST with Webkinz in Baku

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , , at 7:09 pm by Jenn

Ok, I’m not really lost (obviously) but I just finished watching season 3 of LOST and it was so good.  I can’t wait to start season 4.  This has got to be one of the best shows on television hands down.  I couldn’t figure the Jack thing out until the last few seconds….I’m not going to give it away, but WOW!  Good stuff.

As for the Webkinz.  Scott will be the proud owner of the Grey Horse in a few days and I have been on Ebay bidding like a maniac of course.  I won one auction already and my new Black and White Cheeky Dog and Cocker Spaniel should be arriving soon.  I think I’m going to start a farm!  LOL.  I have other auctions that I’m bidding on, we’ll see if I win.  I have a set price that I refuse to bid over so I’m not expecting much!  I’m CHEAP!  I would love to get the Whimsical Dragon, Love Frog, Turtle and Siamese Cat still though!  I told you I was addicted.  It really is a sickness.  I also think there needs to be a crab.  I mean come on.

Now, as promised I have a few pictures of Baku for you.

This is the old style housing, from a distance.

The city is full of high rise apartment buildings and high rise apartment buildings that are being constructed.

This is the the old style of housing (closer view), much of which is still around, but a lot of it is being destroyed (thankfully).  Notice the clothes lines and satellite dishes…people live in these structures.  Oh, take note of the rocks all over the blue tarp…that’s someones roof…yep.

This is a view from our apartment building.  We can see the Caspian see and also hear the prayer chants from the mosque.  See it there on the left with the dome.

I realize that these aren’t the greatest pictures.  I am getting there!  I hope to get a few pictures of the old city this coming week.  It really is beautiful.

What A Difference The Sun Makes.

Posted in Journal tagged , , , , , , , at 3:19 pm by Jenn

The sun is shining today!  I actually felt like getting out of bed this morning.  I felt so energized I decided to walk to the Embassy for lunch.  -12 Celsius, who cares!  I have my new down coat and the sun is shining.  I even remembered to take my camera with me and snap some long overdue pictures of Minsk.

 So here they are:

This is taken as my walk is just getting underway, I’m a little way from my apartment, but not very far in to my walk.

I don’t know much about this memorial – CTELLA (pronounced Stella) Memorial, but it is a few blocks from our apartment.  There is a great park surrounding it.  This is a memorial monument for WW2 soliders.  There is a plaque there, but of course, I cannot read it (note to self, ask someone what the plaque says).

I sometimes pass this billboard.  It used to say Happy Birthday Minsk, now it says something along the lines of Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

There are a couple of bridges to cross and I love to look at the ducks.  I can’t imagine being in the water this time of year.

These planters are scatter throughout the park.  They change each season from what I’ve seen.  In the fall there were mums, now there is pine greenery.  They are really pretty.

Here’s another view of the river looking down toward the Island of Tears.  I don’t have a picture of that today, but will make sure to take one for a future post.

Every once in a while I stop to look around and behind me.  It’s that kind of town.  There’s no one there today.  I guess they don’t like the cold either.  I decided to snap a picture showing the distance I’d covered.  If you look off in the distance behind the building in the middle you can see the monument.

So that’s it.  Finally some good pictures of Minsk on a sunny day.  I had to put the camera away though because it was so windy that my cheeks were burning.  I still had about a 15 minute walk and was desperate for a latte to warm me up.
